バートは天才？

アメリカの人気TVドラマ「シンプソンズ」から、セリフをピックアップして、英語を勉強しましょう。　「シンプソンズ」は、いわゆるアニメですが、見くびってはいけません。　ドラマあり、パロディあり、痛烈な風刺もあったりして、大人でも真剣に考えてしまうような社会問題も出てきます。　非常に奥が深いのです。　細かく注意していると「あこれってもしかして…」といろんな発見があって楽しいですよ。

■ SCENE 0:01  ←時間を示しています。■　「スクラブル」 冒頭でシンプソン一家が楽しんでいるのはスクラブル（scrabble）というゲーム。　文字がついたフダが配られ、単語になるようにテーブルの上に出していきます。　基本的に長い単語を作って、手持ちのフダがなくなった人が勝ちです。
#1 Bart:	Come on, Mom.
#2 Lisa:	Yeah, Mom, hurry up.
#3 Marge:	All right. How about "he"? Two points. Your turn, dear.
#4 Homer:	How could anyone make a word with these lousy letters? Oh Wait! Here's a good one! "Do."
#5 Lisa:	"ld." Triple-word score!
#6 Homer:	Hey, No abbreviations.
#7 Lisa:	Not I.D., Dad. "ld." It's a word.
#8 Bart:	As in, "This game is stup-id."
#9 Homer:	Hey, shut up, boy.
#10 Lisa:	Year, Bart. You're supposed to be developing verbal abilities for your big aptitude test tomorrow.
#11 Marge:	We could look this "id" thing up in the dictionary.
#12 Homer:	We got one?
#13 Marge:	I think it's under the short leg of the couch.
#14 Lisa:	"ld. Along with ego and superego, one of three components of the psyche."
#15 Homer:	Get out of here.
#3 turn というのは、ゲームなどの順番のことです。 #4 で手が悪すぎるとぼやくホーマーですが、手元を見ると OXIDIZE と単語ができていたりします。　つまり、一発で上がりなのですが…　　なんと、作った単語は DO. 　テーブルの上にも短く、簡単な単語ばかり並んでいて、笑えます。

■ SCENE 0:06■　「欠席届」 バートの落書きが見つかって、学校に呼び出されたホーマーとマージ。　バートの落書きを元に戻すために、スキナー校長から、$75を請求されてしまいます。
#1 Secretary:	Mr. and Mrs. Simpson are here.
#2 Skinner:	Send them in.
#3 Marge:	Hello, again,  Principal Skinner.
#4 Homer:	What've you done this time, boy?
#5 Skinner:	I caught your son defacing school property this morning. We estimate the damage at $75. And frankly, we think it's terribly unfair that other taxpayers should put the bill.
#6 Homer:	Hey, it's a crummy system. but, what I am gonna do. Oh, no. He can't mean that. My wife thinks you want me to pay for it.
#7 Skinner:	That was the idea.
#8 Homer:	Oh.
#9 Skinner:	By itself something like this might not call for extreme penalty. But this is not an isolated incident. Bart's behavior is unruly. He's frequently absent from school then gives teachers excuse notes that are obviously childish forgeries when compared to... Well, at any rate, it is my reluctant decision--
#3 again って、先に落書きのスキナー校長を見たからでしょうか。　#7 日本語でアイデアというと、意外性や革新性がある考えを指すことが多いですが、英語で idea といえば、普通に考えを意味します。 スキナー校長に弁償を迫られて、ホーマーは小切手を書き始めます。　 #9で、校長はバートがよく持ってくる欠席届が、childish forgeries (子供の書いたような偽物) なので、問題だと話を続けます。 ところが、受けとった小切手と欠席届の筆跡は一致。 この時、一瞬固まってしまった、校長の表情は傑作です。

■ SCENE 0:08■　「まったくのナゾ」 緊急の用件だと現れたドクター。　「バートは天才だ。今朝受けた知能テストで高得点でを出した。」と興奮気味です。
#1 Skinner:	I think we should retest him.
#2 Doctor:	No, no. I think we should move him to another school.
#3 Skinner:	Oh, better yet.
#4 Doctor:	Bart, we'd like you to try a kind of school that doesn't rely on grades and rules, and bells and buzzers. A school without walls. Where you do as much or as little of the assignments as you feel you need to. Does that sound good, Bart?
#5 Bart:	Sign me up! Doc.
#6 Doctor:	Excellent. We're all set then. Here's all the information you need. Show up around 9-ish. Mr. and Mrs. Simpson, congratulations once again.
#7 Skinner:	We're all in a mood to celebrate.
#8 Homer:	Doc, this is too much. My son, a genius? How does it happen?
#9 Doctor:	Well, genius level intelligence is usually the result of heredity and environment. Although in some cases it's a total mystery.
#1〜#3 スキナー校長はテスト結果を信じていません。　もう一度テストをやり直した方がいいと、小声でドクターに忠告します。　しかし、バートを天才の学校へ転校させようというドクターの提案に、やっかい払いができるとアッサリ同意。 #9 は、どうして天才が生まれたのか尋ねられたドクターの返事。　「天才は一般に遺伝による場合が多い」と、ホーマーを眺めるが、「まったくのナゾの場合もある。」と締めくくります。　笑えますね。

■ SCENE 0:18■　「告白」 天才の学校になじめないバートです。　いろいろ悩みますが…
#1 Doctor:	Now, Bart, we want to emphasize that nobody's angry about this. We're just concerned. When a young man with a 216 I.Q. can't make a simple experiment work it doesn't take a "Bart Simpson" to figure out something's wrong. Tell me, is the class moving too slowly for you?
#2 Bart:	Lord, no!
#3 Doctor:	What can we do to make you happy?
#4 Bart:	I want to go back to my old class.
#5 Doctor:	Don't you remember the boredom the ennui, the intellectual malaise?
#6 Bart:	Yeah, well, you know, kind of. I was thinking I could go undercover.
#7 Doctor:	Undercover? Bart, I'm intrigued. Go on.
#8 Bart:	Well, I could pretend I'm a regular dumb kid. You know. To study them and the stuff they do each other. You know, see what makes them tick.
#9 Doctor:	I see. Like Jane Goodall and the chimps.
#10 Bart	Year.
#11 Doctor:	This is most impressive, Bart. You write up your proposal while I talk to Principal Skinner.
#12 Bart:	Proposal?
#13 Doctor:	You know, outline the project, what you hope to achieve and what you require to do it.
#14 Bart:	Gotcha, man. My proposal, by Bart Simpson. I want to pretend I am a regular dumb kid period. By this I hope... Oh, no. For this I will... require... Oh, man. My Confession, by Bart Simpson. I am a regular dumb kid, period. I cheated on my intelligence test period.
#15 Doctor:	Finished already? Principal Skinner will be very interested to... You know, you misspelled "confession."
理科の実験で失敗をしてしまったバート。 #1 クラスの授業がゆっくり過ぎるのか聞かれてしまいます。 #6〜#10 なんとか元の学校に戻りたいバート。　「普通の子供のフリをして調査します。」とドクターを説得。　うまくいったかに思えましたが… #11 企画書を書いてくれといわれて大ピンチ。 #14 なやむバートですが、結局正直に書いてしまうことに、しました。 #15 でも、「confession のスペルが違っているよ」と、笑えるオチがついていました。

■ SCENE 0:21■　「もとに戻った？」 今までのいきさつをホーマーにも、話すバート。　どうやら元に戻ってしまったようです。
#1 Marge:	What's going on out there?
#2 Lisa:	I think Bart's stupid again, Mom.
#3 Marge:	Oh, well.
#4 Homer:	You can't stay in there forever!
#5 Bart:	I can try!
#6 Homer:	March your butt right out here. Now!
#7 Bart:	No way, man!
#8 Homer:	Son, if you don't come out, I can't hug you and kiss you and make you feel better.
#9 Bart:	You think I'm dumb enough to fall for that? I'm insulted.
#10 Homer:	Don't.
#1〜#3 元に戻ったのに、意外と冷静。　リサは元々信じていなかったようですが、マージまで冷静なのには、笑います。
