アメリカの人気TVドラマ「シンプソンズ」から、セリフをピックアップして、英語を勉強しましょう。　「シンプソンズ」は、いわゆるアニメですが、見くびってはいけません。　ドラマあり、パロディあり、痛烈な風刺もあったりして、大人でも真剣に考えてしまうような社会問題も出てきます。　非常に奥が深いのです。　細かく注意していると「あこれってもしかして…」といろんな発見があって楽しいですよ。

■ SCENE 0:01 ■　「社会見学」バートは学校の授業で、ホーマーの職場を見学に行くことになりました。　出発前に生徒を集めて、先生が注意をしています。
#1 Teacher:	The class. I don't want this field trip to be a repeat of our infamous visit to the Springfield State Prison. So I want you all to be on your best behavior. Especially you, Bart Simpson.
#2 Bart:	Mrs. Krabappel, I didn't unlock that door.
#3 School Bus driver:	Sorry, little dudes. "Party hearty"equals "tardy."
#4 Teacher:	All right, children, count off.
#1 注意事項を話す先生。　前回の見学授業の光景が目に浮かぶようです。 #2 それにしても、ガキの見学者に、カギを開けられてしまう刑務所って…(寒) #3 アメリカの学校といえば、黄色いスクール・バス。　遅れてやってきた、バス・ドライバーの言い訳です。 tardy というのは「遅刻」のこと。　昨日の夜、パーティをやってたから、遅刻してしまったということです。 #4 count off は、点呼するという意味です。　子供達は1, 2, 3... と声に出して点呼をしていきます。この後、スクールバスが、通る町の光景が妙にリアルで皮肉っぽい。　廃棄物処理場に、古タイヤ置き場など、ろくなところを通りません。ホーマーの職場は、原子力発電所です。　ここも細かいところにギャクがいっぱいなので、わくわくして探しましょう。　「見学はあなたのリスクで」と注意書きがあったり、３つ目の魚がいたり。　張り紙にも、おもしろいものがありますよ。

■ SCENE 0:08■　「ホーマーの職さがし」クビになってしまったホーマー。　　とんでもない働きぶりのようですが、新しい職は見つかるのでしょうか？
#1 Lisa:	Here's a good job at the fireworks factory.
#2 Homer:	Those perfectionists? Forget it.
#3 Lisa:	How about this: supervising technician at the toxic waste dump.
#4 Homer:	I'm no supervising technician. I'm a technical supervisor. I've never done anything worthwhile in my whole life. I'm a big worthless nothing!
#5 Marge:	There, there, Homer. You'll find a job. You caused many industrial accidents and you've always bounced back.
#6 Lisa:	Yeah, Dad. You can do it!
#7 Bart:	Yeah, Go for it, Dad.
#8 Homer:	You're right! I'm young, I'm able-bodied, and I'll take anything. Watch out, Springfield, here I come.
#9 Bart:	Don't give up, Dad.
#2 perfectionists は、完璧主義者という意味。 #4 supervising technician と technical supervisor の違いを深く考えないください。（笑） #5 「いままで何回も職場で事故を起こしたけど、立ち直ってきたでしょ」　と、とんでもない慰められ方をしてしまいます。　オイオイ。

■ SCENE 0:08 ■　「モウの店」なかなか、仕事が見つからないホーマー。　モウの店で憂さを晴らします。　いっぽうバートは、モウの店にイタズラ電話を掛けます。
#1 Moe:	Moe's Tavern.
#2 Bart:	Is Mr. Freely there?
#3 Moe:	Who?
#4 Bart:	Freely. First initials, I.P.
#5 Moe:	Hold on, I'll check. Is I.P. Freely here? Hey, everybody! I.P. Freely! Wait a minute. Listen to me, you lousy bum! When I get ahold of you, you're dead. I swear I'm gonna slice your heart in half!
#6 Homer:	You'll get that punk someday, Moe.
#7 Moe:	Ah, I don't know he's tough to catch. He keeps changing his name.
#8 Homer:	Moe, I think I'll have another... Oops. I'm a little low on funds. Can you cover me just this once?
#9 Moe:	No. Sorry.
#10 Homer:	Why not? I think after all these years I deserve an explanation.
#11 Moe:	I don't think you'll ever get another job and able to pay me back.
#12 Homer:	Oh.
#13 Moe:	Don't worry, we're still friends.
#1 Moe's tavarn というのは、店の名前。　店主の名前をつけて ABC's shop などとした店名がよくあります。　tavern というのは、アルコールの販売を許可されている店です。　アメリカではアルコールの取り扱いに厳しいので、許可されていない店では、飲むことができません。 #5 イタズラの内容。　わかりました？　I.P. の P が、pee と同じ発音なのですが…、これ以上は書けません。（笑） #6 自分の子供が掛けてるとは知らないホーマー。　「いつか捕まるさ」とモウをなぐさめています。 #11 モウは嫌な言い方をしますよね。

■ SCENE 0:15 ■　「市役所で」使命に燃えたホーマーは、市役所にやってきます。　アメリカでは一般市民が参加できる、このようなミィーティングが、常時行われています。　草の根民主主義というやつですね。
#1 Chairman:	Homer Simpson, local resident, has something. Mr. Simpson?
#2 Marge:	Don't be nervous. We believe in you, Homer.
#3 Homer:	Ladies and gentlemen esteemed councilmen boys and girls retired people with nothing better to do. Danger comes in many, many forms. From the dinosaurs that tormented our cavemen ancestors to the...
#4 Chairman:	Simpson, get to the point.
#5 Homer:	I think we should put a stop sign at D Street and 12th. The...
#6 Chairman:	All in favor?
#7 Councilmen:	Aye.
#8 Chairman:	Approved. Meeting adjourned. Coffee and maple logs in the lobby.
#9 Homer:	Wow! They listened to me.
#10 Lisa:	All right, Dad! All right, Dad!
#11 Bart:	Way to go, Homer!
#12 Marge:	You did it, Homer.
#13 Homer:	If they think I'm gonna stop at that stop sign, they're sadly mistaken.
#3 大演説を始めてしまいそうな雰囲気ですが… #4 すかさず、「要点を」といわれてしまいます。　この表現は、覚えておくとイイでしょう。　実際に使うときは、please なんかをつけるといいでね。 #9 listen には、このような意味があります。　ちなみに、hear は listen と違い、「聞こえる」なので、このような意味はありません。 #12 You did it. は、よく使われる表現ですね。

■ SCENE 0:18 ■　「決断？」ホーマーに新しい職を用意して抱き込もうとする、原子力発電所のバーンズ。　ホーマーは申し出を受けてしまいます。
#1 Burns:	Ha... Homer Simpson. At last we meet.
#2 Homer:	Same here.
#3 Burns:	Simpson, I want you to rejoin our power plant family.
#4 Homer:	Sorry, no can do.
#5 Burns:	Hear me out, Simpson. I don't want you to come back as a technical supervisor or supervising technician, or whatever the hell you used to do. I want you to be in charge of safety here at the plant.
#6 Homer:	Safety? But, sir, if truth be known I caused more accidents around here than any other employee. Even a few doozies no one ever found out about.
#7 Burns:	The generous offer I'm making is good for exactly 30 seconds, Simpson.
#8 Homer:	Me, in charge of safety? This place could blow sky-high. No... I'll concentrate on my work now. This guy's desk sure is big. I can't let Marge support the family. This guy's got the cleanest shirt I've ever seen. What should I--?
#9 Burns:	Simpson! Time's up!
#10 Homer:	What the hey. I'll take the job.
#4 no を強調しているので、can do は、語順が逆になっています。　疑問文ではありません。　倒置ですね。 #8 いろいろ悩むホーマーですが… #10 結局、バーンズの申し出を受けてしまいます。　それって、みんなを裏切ることになるんじゃないの？

■ SCENE 0:20 ■　「復職」ホーマーはやっぱり、みんなを裏切ることができませんでした。　この辺は、まっとうな考えの持ち主だったわけです。
#1 Homer:	I can't do it, Mr. Burns.
#2 Burns:	You mean you're willing to give up a good job and a raise just for your principles?
#3 Homer:	When you put it that way, it does sound far-fetched. But that's the lug you are looking at! I vow to continue spending every free minute I have crusading for safety. Of course, I'd have less of those free minutes if you gave me the job.
#4 Burns:	You're not as stupid as you look or sound or our best testing indicates. You've got the job. Now get to work.
#5 Homer:	I'll get to work. But first, I have to say goodbye to some friends. Friends. You have come to depend on me as your safety watchdog so you won't scrape yourself or stub your toes or blow yourselves up. But you can't depend on me all your lives. You have to learn that there's a little Homer Simpson in all of us. And I'm going to have to live without your respect and awe. The only reason I'm telling you this is, I'm going to be leaving you. But don't worry. I have just been appointed the new safety inspector of this very plant. And a big fat raise!
#3 最後に変な売り込みをしていますが、これが功を奏して、復職が決まりました。　メデタシ、メデタシ。　でも、面接に使える英語ではありませんね。　トップとの最終面接だった？のですが。（笑） #5 少し長いですが、締めはホーマーの演説です。

発電所の内部の話は、触れましたが、他にも、おもしろいところが隠れていますよ。
